5 Things You Should Do When You Want To Give Up

Thoughtful Tuesday #13
5 Things You Should Do When You Want To Give Up

1. Remember WHY you started
– Take a moment to reflect back to why you even started in the first place

2. Visualize accomplishing your goals and what it looks like and feels
– Go into what i call the MIND GYM to look at what the future now looks like since you’ve accomplished your goals

3. Think about who else is affected by your decision of giving up
– Who will gain or lose from this decision that you are about to make? It’s not all about you! It could be about your family, friends who believed in you, and the ones who are watching you.

4. Seek motivation
– Express your feelings by talking to someone!
– Look at motivational content.
– Take a break and get re-inspired!

5. Look at your game-plan and how you got here
Count the small wins that lead you to here

Success Vs Achievement

Success Vs Achievement

-The Great Debate-

Success-Achievement

It’s fairly easy for people to confuse success and achievement, or rather to consider them to be the same thing. If you achieve something, you have succeeded; and if you feel successful it means you have a laundry list of things you’ve achieved or acquired to show for it. Right?

Wrong.

Achievement and success are two, entirely different things. In fact, in many instances, you could arguably have one without the other.

Tangible Versus Intangible

The first difference between achievement and success is the tangible versus the intangible.

When a person has an achievement, it’s something very tangible. It’s a thing they can point to and say “hey, look at what I did.” By contrast, success is more a state of mind. It’s intangible – more a thought or a feeling, of having done something worth while or with value.

This very philosophical difference between achievement and success can sometimes entangle people in misunderstanding for years; only to wake up one day and realize that the two are separate, and sometimes success has not truly been attained in spite of a laundry list of achievements.

What Versus Why

The next very real, and also philosophical, delineation between achievement and success is in the ‘what’ versus the ‘why.’

When someone wants to achieve something, it’s always a what. I want to achieve a nice car. I want to achieve a promotion at my job. They are always very specific, as we said tangible, things – making the motivation behind them still very material. ‘WHAT did you want?’ is the question asked after an achievement has been made.

But when someone is in it to succeed, it isn’t a matter of what they want, rather why they want it.

Why Getting the ‘What’ In Sight of the ‘Why’ Wins

To be clear: ‘why’ – or success – does not always win. There are people in this world who never truly know success, in spite of all the tangible achievements and wealth in the world. They may know it, they may not – but all the ‘what’s in the world mean nothing if there is no deeper reason for having done it all.

And vice versa: having this feeling of success, of knowing ‘why’ you work towards the goals you work towards means absolutely nothing if you cannot produce a single, tangible thing to show for it.

This is why getting the ‘what’ – the achievement – in sight of the ‘why’ – the success – wins. It’s that ability to achieve great things, while at the same time keeping focus on why you are doing any of it, that makes a person a great leader, and a well-rounded individual.

So while it may not be a true debate, or disagreement, between success and achievement (after all, how can it be a debate if you want the two to work together, in harmony?); it certainly is important to understand the distinction between the two for the sake of having a balanced philosophy of life and happiness.

Creating a passion for pain

Creating a Passion for Pain
By Dayne Gingrich

The honeymoon phase ended quickly. Bills continued coming in but the income was not matching them. I felt alive focusing on creating a new life, but the reality of what it would take to make it happen instantly knocked me to the ground. With my first child on the way, I begin feeling a pressure to provide for her unlike any I had ever felt in the past. It often led to sleepless nights, quietly wondering how I was going to fulfill the promise I made to myself months ago. I fought and scraped my way to building a small clientele but kept wondering why it was taking so long. As the frustration became too much to handle, I made a phone call that would forever change my life, and consequently, the lives of every student I would work with from that point on. I dialed my new mentor – a 41-year-old man who was a high school dropout, homeless at 16, and was told he’d never amount to anything. At the time we talked he had completed a Masters in education and was finishing his PhD. He had found a way to persevere and I wanted to know what was inside him that made it possible.

His advice blew my mind! He said having a passion for what I did and working hard every day towards my goal wasn’t enough; I needed to create a passion for the pain and struggle that was attached to the journey. ‘What?’ I thought. ‘Love the pain?’ I was always taught that struggle would be a part of the process but having a passion for it was never included in the equation. He taught me that the difference between the person who attains greatness and the one who only dreams of it is the willingness to endure the most pain. He then went a step further and asked me to invite struggle into my life. This, he said, would ensure I’d never again fear the challenging times that would be waiting for me. Moreover, I’d make them a part of my eventual success story.

I was never the same after this life-altering phone call; my mindset was forever changed. From that point forward, as a personal challenge, I’d ask for pain to enter my days while focusing on how strong I could become. Instead of complaining about the difficulty of my chosen career change, I welcomed it. This immediately empowered me and gave me confidence I never knew I had. Shortly after I made this mindset switch, my business became what I had once imagined, my marriage improved and my relationship with my young daughter soared to another level. My story isn’t about success, but rather about the journey to a more fulfilling life, redefining the rules of achievement and the mindset that’s attached. We all have the ability to create the picture we desire, but struggle along the way is not only inevitable, it’s mandatory. Embrace the painful moments, knowing they’re temporary and ultimately teaching you how to turn your dreams into a reality.

Why we don’t do what we should do

20131210-101657.jpg

Because we’re human.
Humans and human bodies tend to take the path of least resistance. We do what we want because it’s easy and enjoyable: sitting at the computer, playing video games, staying home, standing on the sidelines, munching, thinking about going to the gym, etc. The things we know we should be doing tend to have some challenge involved: eating healthy, exercising, doing the right thing, standing up for yourself or others and so much more. It takes a while to break this path of least resistance because of the challenge ahead, but once you do, your past challenge becomes your path of least resistance. After you break your habit, this new thought or action is your new easy path and no longer a challenge. However, it’s that initial effort that we humans tend to not push through and fall back into our comfy routine that we all know and love. It’s change and it’s hard, so why do it? Because if it’s something you really want to accomplish, it’s definitely worth the push, it’s definitely worth the occasional setback, and it’s definitely worth all the hard work, courage, blood, sweat and tears.
